Nothing New - Let's Stick Together!

If we want not just to survive this election cycle, but grow and thrive in it, we must make conscious choices to remain calm and open; to listen and speak.

Here are some practices I engage in to help.

CHOOSE LOVE: I try to meet people where they are and look through their lens.  When we try to listen to others’ perspectives, we can better understand where they are coming from, even if we disagree. A wise person once told me the opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s fear…fear of something different, fear of the unknown, fear of change. Fear leads to hateful words and actions.

BE CURIOUS, COMPASSIONATE, AND FULL OF COURAGE: These are the three practices Starts with Us encourages to engage in daily to help foster independent thinking and constructive communication between people with different opinions. I try to think like a curious child (made easier with my job as a 4K Education Assistant), see things from others’ perspectives, and gather the courage to speak my truth calmly.

SEEK OUT DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES AND LEARN FROM THEM: I regularly seek out well-intentioned, informed, and decent news sources that differ politically from my opinion, so I understand issues from different perspectives.

BE A LIFTER AND A BRIDGE BUILDER:  I try to look for similarities between myself and people of different opinions. What I’ve discovered is we have more in common with each other than we think! How can we use this knowledge to move forward together?

What practices do you engage in to build habits that lead to solving problems across differences?
